REVIEW: Calm Book

Calm seems such an odd word, doesn't it?
My life seems so busy and unplanned at the moment I forget what the word calm even means!

Luckily for me, and my lack of calmness, I won the lovely Kayleighs competition for the Calm book and I thought I'd do a quick review for all you lovely people!

The giveaway also came with this Yankee Candle. Now, I am a huge fire freak, I'm terrified of the thought of fire, when I was younger I used to hang over the side of my bunk bead (back in the 90s there) to sleep so I could keep an eye out for any fires. I think it's all come from when I was younger and I watched the News when they looked around a house that caught fire and I saw there melted Spice Girls videotape, I didn't want MY Spice Girls tape to burn!! But, despite all this, I am a massive candles addict, (though of course will never leave them unattended) and have been through my share of candles, Yankee or cheapo. This scent is so relaxing, I'm burning it right now, and it helps to spread a smell across my room that makes me want to fall asleep, although that's nothing new tbh.

Anyway, my personal phobias and weird habits are for another time, back to the book! Even the look of the book is calming, and on my new background (check. me. out, am I a proper blogger yet?) it just looks like a holiday waiting to happen. Inside the book, the calming continues, and the purpose of the book is to help lead a calmer life. The introduction of the book talks about the stress and anxiety of our everyday lives, and how we let it to build up inside us. I have my first CBT session next week, so the arrival of this book could probably could not have been at a better time.

Inside the book is split into eight sections; Nature, Sleep, Travel, Relationships, Work, Children, Creativity and Food, and is not supposed to be read in a linear fashion so you can choose what support you need at the relevant times. I haven't thoroughly read it all through yet, but what I have seen has been really great and relaxing, so I'm going to show you some of my favourite pages.

I love that first page as it actually is the first page and its just so inspiring and welcoming. And as someone who really struggles with their sleep, I'm really excited to carry on trying out the sleeping pages to try and help me! This section, as the others do, gives you lots of tips on how to sleep well, and not just the normal stuff like 'Turn your phone off!'

Each section has a little space to fill in at the end of it, which of course you can fill in as and how you like. I think I will be using it for hard days, so that when I may have more of them I can look back on my writing here and it will be able to motivate me to get through the difficult days (we all have them don't we). There are also many other places throughout the book to fill in, to help calm, or relax or use in however which way you may wish. It's aimed at reaching every possible person, however your mind works, or however you relax. Even the smell of a bloody new book makes me happy and automatically a lot calmer! The book is described as a 'no rules' book, and this makes it perfect for me!

I don't like things in a linear fashion. Don't get me wrong, I love to stick my noise in a good old book. But when it comes to things to organise, motivate or in general are more personal I like to make my own rules, to make things that suit ME. I think a lot of people are like that these days, whats the point in carrying on with something that doesn't suit you if it's not going to help you?

And of course there's the FREE app for iPhones (and probably Androids) which helps one to relax, feel calm and ready for the day. I have a bit of a problem where I can't sleep in silence, and I'm really hoping and wishing that this app will help me with this. There is so many different options for mediating, whether you want to do it at night, during the day or the morning. It also has like a calendar to show you how many days in a row you've done (calendar is not the right word, what is?) and options to help you sleep, be aware of your body or even wake up.

These two pages are my very favourite, because well, Winnie the Pooh and Roald Dahl, whats not to love?! I would definitely recommend this book, it's only £9.99 and is available to buy from Penguin books!

Have you got the Calm book? How do you like to calm down?

  1. I tend to use yoga and mindfulness meditation to stay calm, or I have all of the intentions of using yoga and mindfulness to stay calm, but usually find myself reaching for my earbuds to play my 80s synth pop ridiculously loud :)

I hope your CBT session goes well! :)
